Easly services – preventive examination by health check

Services

Easly’s services include a diverse range of validated medical exams (diagnostics), which you can perform independently and with proper instructions in the comfort of your own home. The different types of examinations can be broadly divided into two categories: targeted diagnostics in the case of complaints or strong suspicions of a condition (such as an STD or a skin condition like scabies) and, on the other hand, diagnostics that fall into the category of preventive health examination, also called a health check. We discuss the latter category in more detail below.

What is a health check?

A health check is an examination of (part of) your health, without there being a direct reason for it, for example in the form of present complaints or that there is otherwise an indication of a health problem. A health check usually falls into the category of primary prevention: actions that prevent healthy people from developing a particular health problem or disease. Sometimes a health check falls into the category of secondary prevention: early detection of diseases or abnormalities in persons at increased risk.

The importance of prevention

Having a health check done has been increasing in popularity in recent years. This is because doing preventive research on your health can bring important benefits. For example, medical scientific research now shows the usefulness of various forms of prevention. Even in existing healthcare, support for various forms of prevention is growing. Prevention is seen as one of the most important pillars in keeping healthcare affordable and accessible in the future. Also, the Dutch government is strongly committed to prevention and encourages citizens to take charge of their own health.

The advantages and disadvantages of prevention

Easly also believes and sees the benefits of preventive health screening. At the same time, we emphasize that preventive research sometimes has drawbacks and limitations. The main difference from existing medical research, is that it is usually done from a complaint. A health check often involves examinations without an immediate reason. This difference is essential, and therefore, from the perspective of medical ethics, there are also reasons for not having preventive testing. In fact, sometimes preventive testing may reveal a troubling result that requires further investigation, such as with a specialist at the hospital. If, after (costly) additional testing, it turns out that there is – fortunately- nothing serious going on after all, this will likely provide a sense of relief, but may also have created unnecessary scrutiny, stress and uncertainty for the individual.
On the other hand, preventive testing can never state with certainty that a person is completely healthy. Unfortunately, an examination without abnormalities does not necessarily rule out a possible serious condition.
Fortunately, in addition to some limitations and disadvantages, preventive health screening has many advantages. If preventive diagnostics reveal, for example, that your cholesterol or blood sugar levels are (slightly) elevated, you can often prevent worse by starting lifestyle modifications and in many cases medication is not necessary. By being there in time, you prevent severe long-term disease burden. This has great benefits both for you as an individual, but also for society and health care as a larger whole.

The choice is yours!

At Easly, we believe it is extremely important that our clients are aware of what preventive health screening entails and that it has advantages and disadvantages. We therefore encourage our clients to make an informed choice when it comes to doing preventive research through a healthcheck and want to offer them the tools to make this choice as well as possible.
Are you unsure about doing preventive screening through a health check or would you like to know which type of screening is best for you? Our medical team is happy to help you make your choice!
